I have something simple yet stark to point out. Today I received the newsletter from SOME (“So Others Might Eat”), a non-profit in DC that aids the poor and homeless. In the beginning of the newsletter, there was a report containing some legit statistics about homelessness in the United States. These statistics were taken from the Census Bureau:
-14.3 % of Americans now live in poverty, a figure which represents approximately 43.6 million women, children, and men.
-This is the highest level of poverty in the United States in 15 years.
-DC’s poverty rate is 18.4 %, and this figure applies particularly to children for some reason.
-Three out of ten DC children live in poverty, and the poverty rate for DC’s African American children is 43 %.
-Between the beginning of 2008 and the beginning of 2010, family homelessness rose by 37 %.
I don’t really have anything witty or clever to say about this. I was just trying to let myself be confronted by these facts, and I thought I would share them.
